Report: (pictures to come)
The First Annual Arklahoma Shootout tournament was excellent fun and great baseball this past weekend.
Congratulations to the Collinsville, OK Cardinals for a dramatic comeback victory in the Championship game over the NWAMSBL Reds 11-6. It was a fantastic game that could have gone either way until the last inning. George Bowers pitched a great game with no relief available. The MVP battle was won by Chris Kitner of the Collinsville team narrowly over the Reds’ Jeremy Travis. Kitner launched a HR off Bowers in the top of the 7th to start the rally for the Cardinals. His efforts topped off a power packed weekend at the plate with at least three home runs (maybe more) and behind it with at least 3-4 runners caught stealing (that I witnessed). The Home Run Derby Championship went to Marty Stewart of the Reds with three dingers out of Veteran’s North’s big center field fence. One of the balls I retrieved was resting about 100 feet past the 410 mark at centerfield. Since the HR Derby only raised about $60.00, I am going to purchase a couple of wood bats to be signed by NWAMSBL players to present to Joey Faubus, one of our beloved long-time league stalwarts, who is recovering from a horrific motorcycle accident. For those of you that have not heard, Joey lay paralyzed from the chest down for nearly two full days before being discovered in the ravine off Hwy 112. Joey remains in a paralyzed state and his awful situation is further magnified as he has no insurance to help cover his expenses. The league will do whatever it can to assist, so please keep Joey in your prayers.
All teams in the tournament played excellent baseball at times over the weekend despite rain delays on Saturday.
The Alpha pool standings ended:
1. Collinsville, OK Cardinals 3-0
2. Oklahoma City Riverbandits 2-1
3. Lowell, AR White Sox 1-2
4. River Valley AR Diamond Dawgs 0-3
The Numeric Pool ended:
1. Fayetteville, AR Reds 3-0
2. Little Rock, AR Dodgers 2-1
3. Ft. Smith, AR Orioles 1-2
4. Springdale, AR Fighting Irish 0-3
Collinsville, OK Cardinals 11, Fayetteville, AR Reds 6
I would like to personally thank the teams that entered this tournament for making it great in its first year. Especially those teams that traveled from OKC, Tulsa, Ft. Smith, Little Rock, and Alma. I hope that we can double the size of teams to 16 next year. Look for details on next year’s tournament later this fall and an option to rotate the location between league sites.
I would also like to thank Rick Stocker and the Rogers Parks for doing their best to get fields ready on Saturday in possibly the worst possible conditions. Sunday was perfect for baseball… And I would like to thank James Bryan and BUNWA for being patient with us on Saturday during our rain delays.
Lastly, I would like to personally thank all the family and friends who came out to support our teams. Wives, Daughters, Sons, Fathers, Mothers, Uncles, Cousins, Girlfriends, Sponsors, Co-Workers, Friends, and so on... Without them, our league is meaningless. Please continue to support our league and we will continue to strive to provide great entertainment, great sportsmanship, and a wonderful recreational outlet for the men you support. Baseball is a family event greatly rooted in American History, so thanks again for your encouragement and attendance.
Look for a more detailed report later on www.nwamsbl.com
